Kybella® Aftercare Instructions

You may experience swelling, redness, tenderness, bruising, firmness, numbness, or a “bullfrog” appearance under the chin after treatment. This is normal and expected as the medication works to break down fat cells. Swelling is usually worst during the first 2–4 days and gradually improves over 2–4 weeks.

First 24–48 Hours

Apply cold compresses or ice packs wrapped in a cloth for 10–20 minutes at a time to reduce swelling and discomfort.
Keep your head elevated, including while sleeping (2–3 pillows recommended).
Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water.
Eat low-sodium foods to help minimize swelling.
Avoid alcohol and smoking/nicotine.
Avoid touching, rubbing, scratching, or massaging the treated area unless specifically instructed otherwise by your provider.
Tylenol (acetaminophen) may be used for discomfort if medically appropriate.

For the First 3–5 Days

Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, or activities that increase blood flow to the area.
Avoid excessive heat exposure including hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms, hot yoga, and prolonged sun exposure.
Continue sleeping with your head elevated.
Mild firmness, tingling, numbness, or small lumps can occur and are common during healing.
After 48–72 hours, gentle lymphatic massage may be performed if recommended by your provider.

What to Expect

Swelling often peaks around days 2–3.
Bruising and tenderness generally improve within 1–2 weeks.
Mild firmness or numbness may last several weeks.
Visible contour improvement is usually noticed around 4–6 weeks, with continued improvement over time. Multiple sessions are often needed.

Contact Your Provider Immediately If You Experience

Difficulty swallowing or breathing
Severe or worsening pain
Signs of infection (pus, drainage, fever, increasing redness/warmth)
Uneven smile, facial weakness, or trouble moving facial muscles
Open sores or skin breakdown

Kybella® (Deoxycholic Acid Injection) Informed Consent

I voluntarily consent to treatment with Kybella performed by Nurtured by Nurses® and its providers. I understand that Kybella® is an injectable medication used to improve the appearance of moderate to severe submental fullness (“double chin”) by dissolving fat cells beneath the chin.

Treatment Overview

Kybella® contains synthetic deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule that assists in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. Once injected, the treated fat cells are permanently destroyed and can no longer store fat. Multiple treatments may be required to achieve desired results.

Expected Results

Results vary by individual.
Improvement develops gradually over several weeks following treatment.
Most patients require a series of treatments spaced approximately 4–8 weeks apart.
No guarantees have been made regarding the outcome of treatment.

Common Side Effects and Risks

I understand the following are common and expected:

Swelling
Redness
Bruising
Tenderness or discomfort

Temporary difficulty swallowing
Temporary uneven appearance or fullness during healing

I understand swelling may be significant and may last several days to several weeks.

Potential Complications

Although uncommon, risks may include:

Infection
Allergic reaction
Skin ulceration or tissue injury
Hair loss at the injection site
Nerve injury, including temporary facial muscle weakness or uneven smile
Difficulty swallowing
Prolonged swelling, firmness, or numbness
Asymmetry
Unsatisfactory cosmetic result
Need for additional treatment or corrective procedures

Contraindications

I have informed my provider if I:

Am pregnant or breastfeeding
Have difficulty swallowing
Have a bleeding disorder
Take blood thinners or medications that increase bleeding/bruising
Have an active infection in the treatment area
Have had prior surgery or cosmetic procedures to the neck/chin area
Have significant loose skin or medical conditions affecting the neck

Results

There is the possibility of a poor or inadequate response from any treatment. Each individual responds differently. Full results may take several weeks to appear. No guarantees about results have been made. Failure to follow aftercare instructions may lead to suboptimal outcomes or unintended aesthetic effects. There are no refunds available for unsatisfactory results.
